The science fiction series Doctor Who reaches its 50th birthday this year and there was speculation this week that producers of the programme may be toying with a radical departure in considering who will be next up to play the part of Doctor Who.

The 2012 season of the BBC’s flagship long-running science-fiction drama series will launch with Asylum of the Daleks, and will premiere at the BFI in August.

A Dalek belonging to the TV writer and producer Russell T Davies is among more than 30 that will be appearing in the opening episode of the new series of Doctor Who when it returns later this year.
