Microsoft unveils Windows 10

After Windows 8 was much maligned by users, largely in part to its lack of a Start button and a tablet-esque look even when using a PC, Microsoft seems to be trying to right the ship.

Yes, as predicted, Windows 10 will feature the return of the Start menu, according to BBC News.

The new operating system will run on virtually every Microsoft product imaginable — tablets, PCs, smartphones, even Xbox consoles — and will also behave differently depending on the medium. There will be no need to switch between desktop mode and app mode, as was the case with Windows 8.

The Financial Post says that while the OS won’t be officially released until next year, it’s in line with CEO Satya Nadella’s focus on mobile devices and Internet services.

The new OS will no doubt be a litmus test for Microsoft on whether users will make the jump. Recent data says that five out of six Windows users are using an OS that isn’t Windows 8.

The Verge reports that millions of users are still clinging to Windows 7, and Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore had a colourful way to describe his hopes for Windows 10 at the launch event:

“We want all these Windows 7 users to have the sentiment that yesterday they were driving a first-generation Prius, and now with Windows 10 it’s like a Tesla.”
