A Colombian farmer reported Monday that a hen in his chicken farm known by the name “Franciscana” laid an egg weighing 245 grams which he claims is unique and possibly a world record. The egg is almost 13 cm (5 inches) long and nearly 7.5 cm (3 inches) high.
"Franciscana laid the egg on Thursday February 2 at 2.10 minutes in the afternoon (19:10 hrs. GMT)," said Hernando Niño, a 43-year-old agronomist, owner of the farm Altamira, located in the municipality of San Francisco, about 50 kilometers from Bogotá.
Franciscana is five years old and weighs about 4.5 kilos. So far she always laid eggs of regular size.
"As a farmer, this is the first time I see an egg of that size in native hens. Regular size eggs usually weigh between 75 and 85 grams.”, said Niño.
"This egg has been preserved and will be exhibited in a glass urn for people to admire it." Hernando has already started building the box to display Franciscana’s phenomenal egg. The farmer is making arrangements to have this egg recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest one ever laid by a hen.
Hernando said that his chickens are fed corn and a plant called Mulberry.
