Robert Coello, 44, was assaulted in his cell at Grendon Prison, in Buckinghamshire, which holds some of the most dangerous criminals in the UK. He was in a cell on G wing, which is designed to be a therapeutic community.
BBC News reported that it was understood he suffered head injuries after being stamped on.
The prison opened during the 1960s and can hold up to 235 prisoners.
A 25-year-old male inmate, who is already serving a life sentence for murder, has been arrested on suspicion of murder in relation to the incident. The man has been bailed back to the prison.
Coello was taken to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury, where doctors spent seven hours trying to save his life. Their efforts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead.
Coello had been sentenced to a minimum of seven years in custody after admitting to four counts of rape and other offences.
He later volunteered to go to Grendon. Inmates must convince interviewers that they have a genuine desire to change before they are admitted to the facility. There are education classes at the institution and some prisoners are able to be involved in electing peers to leading roles in therapy sessions and meetings with staff over the prison’s operations.
According to BBC News, the Prison Officers' Association said that recent budget cuts had put the prison under pressure.
