It is already established that Ohio is one of the several crucial battleground state in this year’s United States Election. GOP Presidential nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona and Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois are campaigning hard in this state. Recently, McCain had pulled out of Michigan to focus resources on Florida and Ohio.
Florida is another crucial battleground state. Many have said that wins in Florida and Ohio will cement the winning of the presidency.
Right now, the workers at the soon to be shut down Archway Cookies bakery are split on who they will vote for. To these workers, it is going to be an extremely difficult one.
Deb Sheriff, a worker at Archway Cookies is a lifelong Republican that plans to vote for McCain. Sheriff’s father had moved to Ohio from Michigan a few decades ago to build and open up the bakery.
She explains that everybody there was family. To them, life was good because they looked out for each other along with getting good raises let alone two times a year. Also, they had health insurance as well.
Now, the workers learned that the bakery was shutting down and the workers would be without their health insurance. Sheriff explains that it is harder on her daughter, who is a single mom. The daughter works at the bakery. However, the daughter has high blood pressure and is a diabetic. With the loss of health insurance, Sheriff’s daughter will be one of the people that will be hit hard by this.
Terry Mowery, another worker at Archway Cookies explains that their town of Ashland, Ohio, is about to turn into a corpse of its former self. He adds that the manufacturing jobs are leaving Ashaland.
While Sheriff is giving her vote to McCain, Mike Davis, another worker at Archway Cookies, is leaning towards giving his vote to Obama. So far, Davis is not alone. There are plenty of other workers leaning towards voting for Obama.
Davis said: “
The country needs to definitely go in a different direction. Washington is corrupt and everyone knows it, and you have the extremely rich and you have us.”
This unfortunate shutting down of Ashland’s Archway Cookies is an example on how the issue of the economy will determine who ends up winning Ohio come Election Day. The shutting down of Archway Cookies is another example on how big a toll that Ohio is suffering in regards to the economy.
