Snack products in U.S. and Canada recalled over Listeria concerns

All of the products under the recall, including store brand products, are manufactured by Treehouse Foods Inc of Oak Brook, Illinois. Some of the name brands include Planters, Great Value, Meijer, Publix, Roundy, and HyVee.

SunOpta Inc., a Canadian company with its U.S. headquarters in Edina, MN, voluntarily recalled two other products, Dakota’s Best Biggy’z brand roasted and salted kernels; and Planters brand sunflower kernels. The two products manufactured by SunOpta Inc were produced at its plant in Crookston, Minn.

According to the Food Poisoning Bulletin, the products were distributed nationwide through retail stores. As of noontime on Thursday, the FDA does not list this recall. The recalled products include almonds bars, fruit and nut bars, protein bars, trail mix bars, pretzel bars, trail mix, and sunflower kernels, among others.

The Treehouse Foods recall notice says suppliers notified the company of the possible Listeria monocytogenes risk. Treehouse and SunOpta are working with the FDA in an investigation to get to the root of this deadly problem.

“We have isolated the production window to a short timeframe and are working with the FDA and customers to control and dispose of the affected products.” according to the SunOpta recall notice. “We are aware of one customer complaint that did not involve an illness, and we are not aware of any consumer issues due to consumption of this product.”

Retail and wholesale customers are being asked to check their inventories and shelves to confirm there are no remaining recalled products present or available for sale. The recalls by both SunOpta and Treehouse Foods are being done with the full knowledge of the FDA.

Canadian consumers of SunOpta products are asked to contact SunOpta at contactus@sunopta.com to arrange for disposal or return of the product. Consumers with questions can also call customer service: 1-877-237-4374.

Consumers in the United States with any questions concerning Treehouse Foods products may call 1.800.756.5781, Monday – Friday, 7 a.m.– 6 p.m. (CST).

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
