Editing control on personal blogs

Posted Jul 4, 2008 by  Sykos Masters in Internet 17 comments
Hey guys,

Do you think it might be possible to have editing / deleting control over our blogs? The amount of personal attacks and thread hijacking on articles is one thing that I am willing to accept as part of 'free speech' and debate.

But .... as my blog is somewhere that I post non-news items that I think are of interest to others—having to do with DJ things—I can't abide having certain individuals slinging their shyte there. It's true that I could move my blog entries to another site, providing a link within my blog here, but I don't see that as a solution to the problem. It just avoids the issue that not all speech is without consequence.

Thanks.

Sykos first I would like to say just because someone attacks you on your blog I hope that you don't delete it as it was the truth and very well written.
Take it up with Chris or David first and see if the comments can be deleted.
You can delete your blog or even a report that you make but you cannot delete any comment made by another person only staff can do that.

Report it as abuse which it was.

I am going to email you something privately in a minute.

Everybody would be in favor of free speech if only they could control what everybody else says...

I once just took a post down (though I didn't delete it for some reason, i still have it) for things getting out of hand and it made me mad that someone would hijack my post to hurt others so I felt if I wrote it i could d** well take it off ....so that is just what i did...

I have nothing against free speech and all but I still reserve the right to not have something i've written used as a means for someone else to comment bs just to hurt someone else's feelings.

Hope it works out...it would be nice to have the option to block someone from your post if they are spewing filth.

It's sad that some people bring their frustrations or their disbelief to someones post...and from there it escalates to slinging mud and condescension. We seem to have had a lot of that here from time to time...

I think that we should only have the option to report as abuse, comments that are inappropriate, and leave it to the editors to decide.

What we write inspires others to comment, and it expands the discussion and increases our opportunity to learn from one another.

    Sykos, so right.

One persons rights end where anothers begins (or vice versa)

*nodding* .... I may be an l337 (^_^), but I just can't find a place for personal attacks.

Hargrove, I agree that commentary allows for discussion, but what have to learn from name-calling and mud-slinging. I already know that bullies inhabit cyber-space.

    Sykos, so right.

Exactly Gar!!!! I think the saying is "someone's rights end at the tip of my nose ... "

    -- In general --

Maybe I'm just idealistic. You see, I have an opinion where DJ is more than some of the other 'news sites' out there; more professional, balanced, and well-written than the Sniffing Post, citizen journalist 'programs' for the major media, the slew of blogs fostered by FotF and its like, and Faux News.

It upsets, saddens, frustrates, and disgusts me to see excellent reporting sullied by some of the recent activity.

I hear you, Sykos...but believe it or not, we've seen this thing happen time and time again...like it runs in cycles for some reason. And I don't think that you are "just idealistic". I think we all are...we have come to expect more because DJ is such an awesome sight.

    You are right son.

I guess we need to try and get used to it and just not respond to those who have nothing to add but smart alack remarks and attacks.

A recent report of mine I finally had to unsubscribe from with all the crap that was going on.

Oh Sam you know I love you. :)

Sheesh how many times do I have to tell you that???

No it wasn't you or RCB I don't blame either of you because I know how frustrating and angry that Jed can make most of us. I have said things to him out of anger and frustration also.

The very best that any of us can do is try to ignore him. When he isn't ignored I believe he loves it and the attention that he is getting.

The least he could do if he wants to take over someones report is to vote it up. ROFL

I just love to hear you say you love me. *kiss* rofl.

Hope I made you smile today. One of the only reasons I am snarky!
