advice for attending special events

Posted Aug 30, 2009 by  KJ Mullins in World 6 comments
On Saturday I watched a journo from a major news source denied access to the Bill Clinton event's media spots. Why? He didn't do the leg work before hand.
If you want to get into the press areas you have to do the work first. Contact the press person for the event. Follow that up with an email or another phone call prior to the event to make sure all if in order.
Make sure to take your press badge with you to the events. Have your DJ press badge laminated. It's best to have a neck cord for it so it's visible at all times.
While you are waiting to enter the event strike up a conversation with other journalists if you can. Those networking connections are a useful tool.
Most of all enjoy the events. :)

Question... is the DJ press badge legitimate? -- is it widely recognized?

Yes it is. It's not widely recognized yet though. That said I have used it often and no one has objected to it.
I advise having it laminated and carrying with you all the time. You never know when a story happens right in front of you.

I completely agree KJ! Also a camera! I was walking around the city yesterday and saw a protest on Bloor over the ongoings in Iran. I said to myself, "Darn!"

I don't always have my camera but I do have my cell which has a camera. The pictures aren't as good but sometimes its the only photo of an event anywhere. Case in point, a collision of TTC streetcars.

A decent camera matters I think.. why? because I have an awful one and when you're walking into 'Jean-Christophe Novelli inerview' then you need to look half professional; thankfully they had a pics I could use which was a blessing'
