Do contests work for news sites?

Digital Journal just announced a 2 day contest for the most page views for any news or blog story. My question is do these kind of contests bring in readers for the long term or not?
When you go to a site because of a contest do you stay and look around the site? Do you only go to the page to help out a friend make a few extra bucks?
What brings you back to a news site over and over? Do you like hard hitting news or does the lighter side of the day's events bring you back?
Thank you for your comments.
