Even if the Kazakhstan government banned the movie within its border, one reporter believes it is the best film of the year. A satire of the American culture, if anything.
"Cultural Learnings is certainly not an anti-Kazakh, anti-Romanian or anti-Semitic.… It is a cruelly anti-American movie. … It is amazingly funny and sad at the same time," Kazakh reviewer Andrei Shukhov wrote Friday.
"I think this is the best film of the year," he added.
The film has sparked controversy within Kazakhstan, for portraying the nation to be racist and sexist. Even Americans have complained, mostly for appearing in the film and feeling they were made out to look dumb.
The Kazakh government had threatened to sue but then backed off, saying it understands the film is a satire.
