Even before getting to the weekend box office story, Hurricane Sandy surely will put a dent in the numbers. With power outages in many parts of the east, this has to affect the numbers.
By how much will be determined later, but looking at the weekend releases, there could still be a lull before the holiday season really gets going when "Skyfall" opens Nov. 9. Yes, call it the holiday season when James Bond makes his move. Thanksgiving is early this year, so let's jump into it, shall we?
One more quick note is that setting the clock back takes some adjusting, so throw that in as well. But, falling back adds an hour, too.
Weekend
1. "Wreck-It Ralph" - 3,600 theaters
2. "Flight" - 1,800 theaters
3. "The Man With the Iron Fists" - 1,800+ theaters
Judging from the counts, it doesn't look like "Flight," which stars Denzel Washington will win, or will "The Men With the Iron Fists." The squeeze for theater space is on but "Wreck-It Ralph" gets the blessing and, with that count, should beat the other two unless there is some huge per screen average money being dropped. Most would surely opt for the latest animated feature to win, so look for "Wreck."
On another movie note, when Disney announced they would be buying Luca Films, many were shocked and even suggested the franchise would be ruined. However, Lucas said he would give the Disney money to his charity, and Disney will be releasing more "Star Wars" movies. For those rabid fans, they can debate the worth of all if this news.
What really matters is what Chewbacca thinks, right? "I have no doubt Disney will respect and continue the legacy of Lucas Film," said Peter Mayhew, who plays Chewbacca, as noted on Zap2it.
