The former owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Kevin McClatchy, spoke with the New York Times, and revealed to them that he is gay.
McClatchy, 41, told the Times that he is a gay man. This is the first public acknowledgement of his sexual orientation.
According to Yahoo, McClatchy owned the baseball team from 1996 to 2007.
According to ABC, McClatchy said that he felt as if he had an obligation to go public. He said that for around 30 years he did not talk about his personal life, and that he lied about his personal life. He went onto say that he does not want to live out the rest of his life feeling as if he has to hide his personal life.
According to Washington Post, McClatchy said that throughout his career he has heard all types of homophobic language used. He said that this convinced him staying in the closet was the best thing he could do.
McClatchy said that he is sure there will be some people who believe that he should have came out while he was still active in baseball. McClatchy said that hopefully his decision to come out will help end a social barrier in sports.
