A police boat belonging to the Port Authority police department sank in the waters of Jamaica Bay off of Queens during a training exercise. Nearly a dozen officers on board the vessel had to be evacuated to safety though no injuries were reported.
The mishap occurred during a training exercise late yesterday afternoon and involved ten police officers and one sergeant from the Port Authority police.
According to a New York Daily News report of the incident the Port Authority police officers were aboard the vessel when they noticed it begin to fill up with water at around 5 p.m.
Port Authority spokeswoman Jackie Yodashkin told the Daily News that most of the officers were evacuated to a smaller rescue vessel and that the incident was under investigation.
A fire boat from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) responded to the incident and was able to rescue three officers from the bay.
None of the officers suffered any injuries in the incident.
