A new species of fish was discovered in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. The fish, with a penis on its head, has been identified.
The new species of fish is the Phallostethus Cuulong, and it belongs to the Phallostethidae family. The fish is distinguished due to the positioning of the sexual organ, according to
NineMSN.
According to
MSNBC, the penis looks as if it is attached to the fish's chin. The organ also includes the urogential opening as well as the anus, and even a bony rod. There is also a hook that is used to clutch females while they are mating. Researchers say that the female fish's genital opening can be found right at her throat too.
According to
RT, the new species of fish was first discovered back in 2009. The fish is also small, as it is only 2 centimeters long.
Scientists cannot figure out or understand the evolutionary origin of the placement of the penis as well as the fish's reproductive system.
