Prime Minister Julia Gillard opened the Kinghorn Cancer Centre today - a joint venture with the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and St Vincent's Hospital.
She toured the new state of the art facility, meeting with patients and staff, and then attended the opening ceremony.
The opening ceremony included speeches by Mr Bill Ferris AC, Chairman of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and Mr John Gurry, Chairman of St Vincent’s Health Australia.
His Eminence Cardinal George Pell AC, the Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, conducted a blessing ceremony.
Patron of The Kinghorn Cancer Centre, singer Delta Goodrem (a former St Vincent’s Hospital cancer patient herself) performed a couple of songs.
A St Vincent’s Hospital leukemia patient, Ms Julie Soon, gave a moving talk of her experience of cancer.
The Centre cost $128 million and was partially funded by a $70 million Federal Government Grant and major philanthropic support.
