Elche - A rogue firework set off thousands of others in a church bell tower in Elche, Spain during a town festival on Monday, injuring 28 people.
The firework accidentally set off many others in the church bell tower of the eastern Spanish town of Elche, raining down streams of sparks and burning material on to people gathered to watch the spectacle.
A spokeswoman for the Elche Town Hall said that the fireworks were covered by a protective blanket, and in a pack designed to shoot mini-rockets some 300 meters into the air before exploding. However, a firework launched elsewhere landed on the pack, igniting the fuses, minutes before the scheduled launch on Monday.
Ambulances and paramedics were on the scene almost immediately to assist the 28 injured. According to the spokeswoman, three firework operators were hospitalized with serious burns, and 25 other people were treated for minor injuries.
