A video showing a giant mako shark leaping out of water and doing nine somersaults on a line off the San Diego coast last weekend was posted online Wednesday.
According to
ABC15, the shark was hooked during last week's "Flying Mako Catch and Release" tournament in San Diego.
The video was captured on Friday, July 20 by
Keith Langford,
NBC San Diego reports.
The video shows the mako demonstrating amazing acrobatic skills for a shark estimated at 10 ft long and weighing between 500 and 800 pounds. The viewer can hear the excited "Ahhhhhs" and "Ohhhhhhhs" of the anglers.
The anglers said they released the mako from the line after it had jumped nine times.
According to
GrindTV, while the men did not win the tournament, they have the amazing video for consolation.
NBC San Diego reports the purpose of the tournament is to "promote sustainability, conservation and sound management of mako sharks and other apex predators,"
