In a small town where community chatter is the norm, Mark Falvai is a hero to many. Not only did the Qualicum Beach, BC resident beat out 11 other challengers to win HGTV’s Canada’s Handyman Challenge, he also managed to keep it a complete secret.
Although many Oceanside residents were crossing their fingers in hopes that this local boy would make good, no one in the community knew the deep delicious secret that Mark was keeping.
On Tuesday, February 21 2012, the 38-year-old married father of four was confirmed as the winner of Canada’s Handyman Challenge on HGTV after successfully building the top outdoor deck in the show’s final challenge. Residents of Qualicum Beach and neighboring Parksville found out their hometown boy had achieved his dream of winning the competition at the same time the rest of the province did. Local Twitter feeds responded to the good news in record time. Congratulatory tweets made the rounds as word spread of Mark’s success, including Mark’s own Twitter feed. From the Parksville Chamber of Commerce to Vancouver Island magazine publishers, local residents and businesses alike were thrilled with Mark’s success. The Qualicum Beach graphic artist had long been an Island favorite, but as the field of contestants narrowed down, there was growing optimism on Vancouver Island that Falvai would eventually be crowned the victor. Filming wrapped up weeks ago, but contestants were sworn to secrecy as to show’s final outcome.
Now that the show’s season finale has aired, Falvai is free to share his wonderful news with his community. The local Parksville Qualicum Newspaper announced on February 22, that they would be featuring Falvai in an upcoming story in the paper’s weekly edition. After losing his father shortly before the Vancouver auditions took place, this father of four, including 5-month-old twin daughters, is now able to wear a bittersweet smile. Becoming a hometown handyman hero would indeed have made his father proud.
