In what seems to be a train that doesn't want to derail, "The Artist" has picked up another big win on the way to Oscar glory, perhaps.
The Producers Guild of America handed out their annual awards Saturday night in Beverly Hills. Last week the London Critics' Circle gave it their top award as well.
Another film is now starting to emerge in its category is
"The Adventures of Tintin" which won in London as it did from with the PGA as well.
"The Artist" is now a solid front-runner as the award season progresses and it beat out "The Descendants," also a Golden Globe winner for drama, and "War Horse," an epic that has lost its footing. "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" "The Help," "Bridesmaids," "Hugo," "The Ides of March" and "Midnight in Paris" were also up for the top honor.
The
PGA hasn't always had 10 nominees in this category but changed when the Acadmey of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences allowed for up to 10.
As the scorecard continues to impress for "The Artist," the award for animation is certainly a big boost for "The Adventures on Tintin." It beat out "Cars 2," "Kung Fu Panda 2," "Puss in Boots," "Rango." It was "Rango" that had award season legs going into the night. In the documentary category "Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest."
Children's Program went to "Sesame Street" (PBS). It beat out "Dora the Explorer” (Nickelodeon), "iCarly” (Nickelodeon), "Phineas and Ferb” (Disney Channel) and "SpongeBob Squarepants” (Nickelodeon).
In sports it was "30 for 30" (ESPN) taking top honors. Other shows in that category were "Monday Night Football” (ESPN), "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” (HBO), "Sports Center” (ESPN), "2010 FIFA World Cup” (ABC / ESPN / ESPN2) and the "U.S. Open Tennis Championship” (CBS / "/ Tennis Channel).
The long-running series "60 Minutes" won in the news category beating out "Anderson Cooper 360” (CNN), "BBC World News America” (BBC), "NBC News with Brian Williams” (NBC) and "The Rachel Maddow Show” (MSNBC)
"Modern Family" won for comedy and "Boardwalk Empire" took home top honors for drama. "Family" won out over "Parks and Recreation," "Glee," "30 Rock" and "The Big Bang Theory." "Empire" beat "Mad Men," "Game of Thrones," "Dexter" and "The Good Wife."
Other winners included "Dowton Abbey" for long form TV and "The Colbert Report" for live entertainment/talk, "Amazing Race" for competition television.
Special honors were given as well. The
David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures was awarded to
Steven Spielberg. The Vanguard Award went to Stan Lee. The Milestone Award, Les Moonves. Don Mischer received the Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television and The Stanley Kramer Award went to "In the Land of Blood and Honey"
