FedEx has responded to the incident that involved an employee delivering a fragile package without taking care.
Over the past two days a video showing a FedEx employee tossing a computer monitor over a gate as the method of delivery went viral.
As of today the 21-second YouTube video has 3,191,435 views. When Digital Journal reported this story last night, the video had been viewed by about 650,000.
The footage, which was posted Dec. 19, clearly shows a FedEx employee, walking up to a residential gate, hoisting the monitor up and throwing it over the iron gate, then casually walking back to his delivery van.
FedEx has responded to this incident.
Matthew Thornton, FedEx senior vice-president of US operations, said in a statement on the company website, "Along with many of you, we've seen the video showing one of our couriers carelessly and improperly delivering a package the other day.
"As the leader of our pickup and delivery operations across America, I want you to know that I was upset, embarrassed, and very sorry for our customer’s poor experience. This goes directly against everything we have always taught our people and expect of them. It was just very disappointing."
Today the delivery company said the [unidentified] employee has been disciplined.
The delivery guy “did not display behaviour we consider to be reflective of customer service,” FedEx spokeswoman Shea Leordeanu told the Toronto Star.
The spokeswoman did not elaborate what the discipline was, so it is unknown whether he received a stern warning or was fired.
The Star reported in response to a question as to whether or not the incident on video was staged, Leordeanu said, "We have identified a real situation."
“The situation has been resolved to the customer’s satisfaction. The customer has what they need and is happy,” she said.
Reportedly the company used its tracking system to trace the customer, known on the web as YouTube user Goobie55, and was able to track down the errant delivery employee.
Technology has had a substantial impact on society and this incident illuminates that a digital footprint can be potentially left anywhere at any time. In this instance, not only was the delivery man caught in the act by a surveillance camera, but also, due to the tracking capabilities companies such as FedEx use to keep tabs on packages, ultimately tracks employees too.
