A red KIA Optima emitted deadly carbon monoxide, killing five teenage boys the day after Christmas. Juchen Martial had borrowed the car to celebrate his birthday with his four friends at a rented motel in Florida.
Due to the car having had engine problems previously, the boys decided to leave the car running so they would prevent problems from occurring the following day.
This was a bad choice which unfortunately lead to the death of all five due to the carbon monoxide filling the room. The garage was right underneath the room the boys were renting, allowing all the poison to go up and fill the room enough to take their lives.
Police found no trace of alcohol, drugs or anything suspicious at the scene. Only half eaten McDonald burgers were found and the five bodies.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the mother of one of the boys was crying out in Creole, "They killed my son, they killed my son." The boys were all of first or second-generation Haitian-Americans from a small neighbourhood in Miami called Little Haiti.
