The FA today confirmed that the England centre back Rio Ferdinand is ruled out of the World Cup squad due to an knee injury.
Ferdinand will miss the World Cup after sustaining a knee ligament injury at a training session in South Africa.
He was seen leaving hospital on crutches following the incident at training which occurred less than 24 hours after his arrival in South Africa.
The
news comes as something of a blow to England manager Fabio Capello who had placed the captains arm-band on Ferdinand arm in February after removing John Terry from the role.
Replacing Ferdinand in the squad is Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson. He'll join the squad in South Africa as soon as possible.
Capello decided that for the World Cup, Liverpool's Steven Gerrard will lead the England squad as captain.
