The latest movie by Meryl Streep, It's Complicated, earned it's R rating not for sexual content, language, violence or any of the common reasons that the MPAA uses. Pot smoking without consequences got the rating upped to an adult level.
An actor can drink themselves to death or smoke a mile a minute in a Hollywood film without having to deal with an R rating but pass the joint and deal with the Motion Picture Assn. of America turning your flick into an adult fare.
That's the issue in Hollywood when the MPAA rated Streep's movie "It's Complicated" R.
According to the LA Times the MPAA comes down hard when illegal drugs are used on screen without repercussions, including marijuana.
In the film Streep's character and her former husband played by Alec Baldwin enjoy a joint. Streep's character then is shown with a joint in a scene with Steve Martin's character. At no time during those scenes did the characters face consequences for smoking pot.
With laws that have to be observed the MPAA had to give the movie a higher rating than other questionable movie ratings. It doesn't make it seem fair though when kids can easily see underage drinking, smoking, world annihilation but have to be in the presence of an adult to see a light hearted love story because of a joint being passed around.
