UK singer David Bowie has every reason to be proud of his famous name. But for it to be used to name a recently discovered specie of spider in Malaysia, it would most definitely entangle Bowie in a WEB of bewilderment.
German spider specialist Peter Jaeger, who've identified around 200 new species of spiders in the course of a decade, recently told the Observer newspaper about his discovery of the hairy, large and yellowish spider in Malaysia. Jaeger had named the arachnid officially as
Heteropoda davidbowie.
The reason behind the fancy naming of the spider after the English pop/rock star was because jaeger wanted to 'raise awareness about the discovery.' According to the spider expert, most of the species he's discovered are endangered, and that the world is 'quickly losing genetic resources that have evolved over more than 300 million years.'
It is however not immediately known just how far the 'awareness' that Jaeger had talked about is catching on around the globe. And as for David Bowie himself, any reaction from the singer on the news of a creepy crawlie named after him is yet to be seen.
