The exhibition Celebrating 40 Years: New Brunswick Art Bank Anniversary Exhibition commerorates the New Brunswick Art Bank's 40th anniversary.
Tonight is the exhibit's opening in Campbellton, New Brunswick. I attended the opening tonight of the exhibit at the Galerie Restigouche Gallery where it will remain until September 30 when it departs for the Lord Beaverbook Gallery in Fredericton New Brunswick.
All the artists are New Brunswickers and among them are some very well known names, Alex Colville, Freeman Patterson, Lawren B. Harris and Guy Dugay to name only a few.
Before attending the event I collected a bit of background information about the New Brunswick Art Bank from Caroline Walker, Coordinator Art Bank Services / Wellness, Culture and Sport.
BE: Please tell me how the Art Bank came into being and its main purpose.
CW: The New Brunswick Art Bank was established in 1968 following the purchase of 100 works of art by well-known and esteemed New Brunswick artists. Since then, the collection has grown to over 700 artworks by more than 300 artists.
The mandate of the Art Bank is to acquire contemporary artwork for display in government offices and the offices of agencies and commissions.
The Province of New Brunswick funds the Art Bank which has an acquisitions budget of $40,000 every two years. The 2009-2010 NB Acquisitions Program will be announced soon.
