Popular pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines won over Ricky Hatton of England in their just-concluded match held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Nevada. Hatton was knocked down by Pacquiao in the second round.
Popular Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao won over Ricky Hatton of England via knock out in the second round of their scheduled 12 round fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Pacquiao, who recently anounced his intention to seek a congressional seat in his home country, the Philippines, first caught Hatton with a powerful right hook in the first round sending him over to the canvas less than a minute before the end of the round. He barely survived the first round.
In the second round, Hatton appeared to have recovered from the devastating right hook by Pacquiao in the first round but Pacquiao continued throwing powerful punches that landed on targets. Pacquiao caught Hatton with a powerful left hook that sent the popular British boxer to the canvas for good.
Yahoo news reports:
"I was surprised that this was so easy but I've worked hard in training camp since the beginning of March," a beaming Pacquiao said in a ringside interview. "He was wide open for the right hook. I knew he would be looking for my left.
"It's nothing personal. I was just doing my job.
"This is as big for me as the De La Hoya win," the Filipino added, referring to his eight-round stoppage of 10-times world champion Oscar De La Hoya in Las Vegas in December.
Hatton said later in the hospital that he did not see the punch coming but it was a great shot. I know I will be okay, he added
Pacquiao previously announced that he will retire next year after one or two more fights. Floyd Myweather, Jr. expressed interest in fighting Pacquiao later this year.
