It has been confirmed that two Canadians, one now a UN special envoy to Niger are missing in the West African country of Niger.
There are two Canadians missing in the West African country of Niger. One is Richard Fowler who is a UN special envoy to Niger and has also served as Canada's ambassador to Italy and to the UN.
Fowler
was traveling with another Canadian who has not been named and a driver from Niger.
The vehicle they were traveling in was found Sunday evening in good working condition about 40 kilometres northeast of the capital, Niamey. Cell phones, a camera and jacket were also apparently found in the vehicle.
Fowler had arrived in the country a few days earlier for talks with governmental and non-governmental officials.
Officials are not sure whether the three people were on the way to or returning from a meeting with senior government officials when they went missing.
The UN is working with the government of Niger, said Haq.
No demands or claims have been received.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said. "We are mobilizing all networks."
Canadian consular officials have been in touch with the families of the missing Canadians.
