When Toronto police busted a large-scale marijuana grow-op they had to take down two of their very own. Const. Kevin Bourne, a nine-year veteran, and Const. Patrick Lee, an eight-year veteran have been suspended with pay.
The officers are facing numerous charges including production of a controlled substance, trafficking a controlled substance, obstruction of justice and breach of trust. This is the first time that one of Blair's own has been linked to a grow-op.
Twenty people were charged in a major marijuana trafficking operation in
Greater Toronto on Thursday morning. Three of those arrested included corrections officers. One youth was also apprehended.
Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair said that his officers executed 63 search warrants this morning in the York region. Evidence in earlier grow-op busts in York had a trail leading back to two of Toronto's finest.
"The primary purpose (of the organization) was the production and distribution of marijuana, the distribution of other drugs and the laundering of the proceeds of their criminal enterprise," Blair said at a press conference late Thursday afternoon.
Most of the criminal activity that has been part of months of investigation was in the York area.
The raids took place Thursday morning in the pre-dawn hours. Police obtained 17 pounds of marijuana and $60,000 in cash from search warrants carried out in homes and businesses.
The police also seized ecstasy, steroids and drug-making equipment according to Supt. Jim Ramer.
