The Pittsburgh Penguins attempt to overcome the loss of Marián Hossa by signing right winger Miroslav Satan and forward Ruslan Fedotenko each to a one year contract.
Fedonteko, who was a New York Islander last season, had a total of 33 points (16 goals and 17 assists) in 67 games. He also has the experience of winning a Stanley Cup Champioship as he played for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 03-04 season. It has been reported that the contract is worth $2.5 million.
Penguins General Manager Ray Shero has
said that Fedotenko should "play, as he has throughout his NHL career, on the top three lines."
Satan, who also played for the Islanders last season, had a total of 41 points (16 goals 25 assists) in 80 games. He has played in 56 career playoff games, scoring a total of 38 points. The deal is reportedly worth $3.5 million, though exact details have not been released.
According to Shero, Satan should be playing on either the Crosby or Malkin line.
"Satan should be able to play on the top two lines," he said, "that would be the goal. He’ll be a good power-play guy. He has the size and the skill and he has great hands.”
The addition of these two players will help add some much needed firepower to the Penguins after
Hossa's desertion. And, while most of the news has been focused on their offensive losses and pickups, the team has also managed to secure a talented defense by maintaining eight defenseman.
Among those is
Brooks Orpik who has signed a 6-year $22.5 million deal with the team. Orpik had ten assists last season and ranked 10th in the league with 239 hits.
The Pens have also locked up the goalie position by signing Marc-André Fleury to a 7-year $35 million contract.
Shero seems to be on the right track in rebuilding a team that can contend for the Stanley Cup after losing much of last seasons talent to the free agency.
