In light of consumer responses to gas prices, some states in the US and Canada are offering incentives to consumers to upgrade their inefficient gas guzzlers, trading them in for newer and more “green” models.
As the national average for a gallon of gas continues to make its painful ascent, many drivers are left stranded with their fuel eating hunks of metal and empty wallets. In a report today, gas prices were said to be averaging at $4.087, or nearly 40 percent higher than just a year ago.

So where does that leave drivers?

For many, they are hanging onto those heaps because they cannot afford to trade them in or downsize to a more fuel-efficient mode of transport and governments are across the US and Canada are taking notice.

On January, 2009, Canada will officially be operating a program called the National Vehicle Scrappage Program, designed to offer incentives for individuals who retire their 1995 or earlier model vehicles. The program’s goal is to remove at least 50,000 clunkers from Canada’s streets.

Some of the incentives include:

Public transit pass discounts
Bicycle discounts
Rebate toward the purchase of a new care
Membership in car-sharing programs
$300 Canadian Cash

According to a report by Reuters in early June, just over a third of the vehicles on Canada’s roadways were built before environmental standards for automobiles were introduced in 1996. That portion of cars and trucks is responsible for the production of nearly 20 times more pollution than newer models.

Certain states across the US have jumped aboard as well, offering major incentives to those who retire the old inefficient models. Texas launched Drive a Clean Machine at the beginning of the year, which offers a $3,500 US dollars cash incentive towards a new state approved vehicle to low-income city dwellers that own a vehicle 10 years old or older.

According to the Detroit News, a spokesperson from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality said “It’s a great way to get those older vehicles off the roads”.
Over 11,000 gas guzzling’ clunkers were taken off of the Texas roads and replaced with more economical automobiles so far this year.

California is also offering a program that gives residents up to $1,500 US dollars in order to retire their vehicle or $500 US dollars to repair their vehicle if they fail emissions testing. Unlike Texas, there are no income requirements for this program and around 16,000 bad clunkers were removed from California roads last year.

As fuel costs continue to soar, many folks are beginning to find ways to cut their driving and gasoline bills. But now for some drivers, there is a way to ease into a more efficient model that gets better gas mileage and more environmentally friendly.

Lets hope others states play follow the leader in this governmental plan. .

Welcome back, Nikki! Did you have a good time during your travels?

This is a smart move by these states to get people to get rid of their gas guzzlers...

Nikki, where have you been all these days. Welcome back. Regarding fuel costs, it is time to improve the fuel efficiency independently because the current auto owners and oil sellers in the US will never allow that. Sometimes I wonder whether car makers get kickbacks from petroleum industry to keep producing low mileage cars.

This might not be something to increase your mileage but it will certainly put some money back in your pocket if you have a business. IRS just increased the mileage deduction rate from 50.5 to 58.5 cents for every mile. There is an exciting business tool that captures your mileage automatically (hands free) and sends this information through wireless networks to http://www.MileageLogger.com . I think is a great tool to get your money back when is time to do your taxes.

I wish they offered rebates on BIG vehicles that cost $100 to fill up!!!

And yes, I had a fantastic time but man, it cost us so much in gas. We had to use the truck to drive and it was around $100 per fill up. We did pack sandwiches for food and wylers sugar free lemondade to drink.

    Vegas was a hoot.

Janet - I thought UK was pretty good on keeping their autos in shape (that healthy MOT tax and all)

    TX Gull!

These programs are so "hyper" targeted but at least they are a step, ya know?

Canada is giving $ incentives for handing over the old heap (but it has to operate).

Texas is helping out those who need it.

California is targeting those who fail emissions.

I wonder what other states will follow - or will they?

Yes, hopefully they should make it nationwide like Canada, so every state can follow it.

Talk about auto congestion! vegas has a lot of seemingly automobile probs. Yet, there is also no smoking bans anywhere so I had breathing issues. But it was fun.

The shows were great and HP treated us to VIP status (the bar tab alone was in the double digit thousand range, not to mention the personal security guard and VIP booths etc).

    Got great photos.

Well, that's good that despite the breathing probs, you did have fun. My sis also got some pretty good photos from out there...she was there on a convention for accounting/taxes learning. (All expenses paid by her employer!)

I've been twice and both for conventions! Funny, right?

this one was HP University and the last one was Martial Arts Conference. Both were basically paid for.

The cheapest vehicle you will own is the one you have (so long as it mechanically sound and dependable).

I drive a 1991 GMC pick-up that's paid for and it's red and ugly and omly gets 13 mpg.
The price of a new truck would be about $25k and it would get better milage - say 20 mpg.

If gas is $5 per gallon:
    $25000 x $5 / gal x 13 mpg = 65,000 miles

The latest allowable write-off for mileage is 58.5 cents/mile
I only drive a short distance to work, but if I keep my nearly 18 year old truck long enough to drive the 65k miles it would take for a new one, I'd get an amazing $37k reimbursement for mileage where I work.

I could make money if I drive it long enough (with repairs, maintenance, gas, etc.) I'm still around 14 cents per mile over the life of the truck.

    Math is a wonderful thing.

Thanks for sharing - that is something that needs to be factored in as well, Hammy! As long as your "self proclaimed ugly" red truck isn't spewing horrific smells, creating problems for others, then I cannot see where it is a problem for you - sounds like you have a plan that works for you.

I love my tiny vw bug that gets around 30 mpg. It works for me. I despise my husbands honker truck because it is costs so damn much to fill.

Both of ours are newer (4 years old) and get good gas mileage but the truck is more expensive to run, especially for short trips.

    Thanks again.
