When summer arrives many enjoy putting away the boots and shoes and being able to wear sandals or flip-flops. There can be a danger of cancer if feet aren't properly protected.
Many who live in regions where winter prohibits wearing sandals look forward to the warm weather and wearing sandals.

There are those who do wear sandals with socks until snow might force some to put on boots. Sandals and socks---hmm not my "cup of tea."

Ah but when summer arrives the must have fashion is sandals and flip-flops. They can be worn when dressed up for a fancy night out, with jeans, with shorts or with a bathing suit.

Just have the toenails looking nicely groomed. If you can afford it get a pedicure, it is wonderful, and have the toenails polished. You can also give yourself a pedicure and finish it off with a pretty nail polish. Well at least for the ladies.

A toe ring or two can give a nice look also.

But where does the danger come in to your health?

Foot doctors are issuing warnings of sun exposure to the feet. They warn that with that type of footwear there is a lot of skin that is being exposed to sunlight that is not used to UV rays.
Those who wear sandals are increasing their chances of skin cancer.

The need to cover exposed skin with sunblock when one will be in the sun for long periods of time is well known to most people. Many forget about the needed protection to their feet.

As reported by Sky News, Anthony Kontos a podiatric surgeon from the London Foot and Ankle Centre said,
"The skin is very thin there. With the increasing popularity of open-toed sandals and flip-flops, feet often have an intense blast of sunlight."

Dr. Kontos said that in the last three months his clinic has seen at least two cases of skin cancer.

His advice for those who wear footwear where their skin is exposed to the sun is to coat their feet with sunscreen for protection.

He also states that skin cancer is not always on just the top of the foot. It can also occur on the soles of the foot, between the toes and also can be found under the toenails.

He points out that the signs of cancer that are normally looked for else where on the body such as moles and bruises, are often overlooked on the feet.

Interesting report. Here in California sandals and zories (the Japanese name for "flip flops") are year round wear so maybe the skin develops a better resistance than feet that spend part of the year in snow (yuck) boots. ;o)

I don't wear flip flops but can't wait for warm weather to be able to get the sandals out. I start wearing them as soon as I can in the spring and for as long as I can into the fall.

I really do like snow on Christmas but other than that one day I would prefer warm weather.

I've never even thought about putting sunscreen on my feet. Then again, because of my meds, I can't be out in the sun for long periods of time.

Everything that I have read lately says we need a certain amount of sunlight each day especially those of us that live in the northern states.

I wrote a report about what my dermatologist had said about sun blocks earlier this month.

I missed that one, Cynthai...and just read it. Like I said in my other comment...tans mean nothing to me anymore...and I don't sit where I'd get any sunlight anyways!

A suntan is not something that I even have a desire for anymore.

I don't sit in the sun either but if I know I will be in the sun for a long time I apply a good sunblock before I am exposed to the it.

Ditto here. Where we go though at the lake there's plenty of shade.

If I remember correctly even sitting in the shade at the lakeside can have its dangers. I believe the lake can reflect the sun so even when at the lake and in the shade it is still a good idea to wear a sunblock. A waterproof sunblock for the kids who will be in and out of the lake is a good idea also.

Good report Cynthia. It is warm here now, I see many wearing flip-flops, hope they read this report.

    Thanks cgull.
It is a good warning as I am sure that many do not think of applying sunblock to their feet.

A sunburn on the feet can be very painful. If someone has to put shoes on later it could be almost impossible for day or two.

True, Cynthia. Actually, their cabin isn't on the lake and when we go down to the lake, we're under a tree. At the cabin, there's a good canopy overhead, so I don't worry so much.

    Good Deb.

After having skin cancer several times I know it is always wise to be careful.

Not fun getting chunks cut off your body even if some are small chunks. LOL

Know what you mean. I've seen the scars left from having cancerous spots removed...not pretty.

interesting article. I love flipflops and open toe/foot sandals. I usually use a lotion everyday with spf in it, so hopefully I'll be ok :-)

I love sandals but don't wear flip.flops. I don't think that I have ever had a sunburn on my feet.
If you lose a lotion with an spf you should be OK, especially if it is at least a 15.

the flops are my favorite. I probably have at least 10 pairs...and they're so cheap to buy!

If you've never tried the Sperry Topsider flops, you would be amazed at how comfortable they are compared to regular flops of any other kind.

Hmm Julybug, aren't you getting married in a few days?
What does the soon to be husband say about all the flipfloops and shoes? I know my husband says something about all my sandals now and then.

Oh yeah, I just ignore him. :)

    9 days Picasso!!

And yes, the future hubby has some sort of issue with all the shoes I have. He wants me to sort through them and get rid of at least like 1/2 of them. I just laughed.

Silly boy's got alot to learn.

Yep teach em right away and hopefully they will learn to talk about important issues not about what you have. After all, all those shoes and flipfloops are needed. :)

I know that I have sandals to match almost every outfit. Men really need to learn to accept this. They will never understand it but that is their problem.

OK since I am supposed to be on vacation so I am out of here, until later I am sure. :)

This one was soooooooo good. It was on field greens with a raspberry dressing on the side. A nice scoop of the chicken salad with just the right amount of mayo.[ I don't like it when it is swimming in mayo.]

A lot of good fresh fruit with it and two generous pieces of orange bread which was delicious. Really good.
