Health officials have devised a plan to get smokers to quit and are offering nearly 1,000 of them almost $100 a month to give up their habit. Those who don't favor this plan say it's nothing short of bribery.
Dundee, Scotland - Paul Ballard, the public health director at the National Health Service Tayside told
The Scotsman that Dundee has a big problem, proportionately after Glasgow, with smokers not being able to quit. Even though cessation services do work, it's still not enough to keep smokers interested or motivated to quit.
Thus the plan was developed to pay smokers almost
$100 a month to quit their tobacco habits. Ballard stated,
"And, although current smoking cessation services are working well, because of the complexities of poverty and health, we know we need to do more to tackle this."
However, those against this plan, which will be paid for in part by the Scottish Government, feel it's a form of bribery and a misuse of taxpayer's money.
Then, there's the pro-smoking lobbyist who are definitely against this plan. They feel that it's an adults choice to start smoking and should be an adults choice to quit without being forced or bribed.
