Larry Page and Sergey Brin started Google search engine 10 years ago on September 15th, 1997 and already has become a global force in business to reckon with. It is now the major dominant search engine in the Internet.
Page and Brin were 24 year old post graduate Stanford students at that time when they registered their domain name Google on September 15, 1997. Tomorrow will be their 10th birthday based on that date. They incorporated Google however on September 7, 1998. Some say, they should call the later date as the official date, but I think the registration of the domain name on the internet that has created a revolution in the web, that should be the appropriate date.
The word Google was derived from “GOOGOL” which means 10 to the power of 100, a large number, and Google itself has grown to that stature in the Search engine, Advertising, E-Mail (GMail), Videos (YouTube, Google Video) categories. Even the dictionary has started using the word “Google” as verb now.
Google is planning to celebrate this anniversary with a number of events and will announce it soon according to ZDNet.
There were other search engines before Google such as Yahoo and MSN but Google just pulled away from both of them and many others with its deep search and rapid display of results.
If they look Google now for the first time, no one will believe it was just started 10 years ago. In another 10 years, it would have grown even more; it may be involved in mobile phones, internet, space sponsorship etc.
Happy Birthday Google, you have helped us immensely in a variety of ways and made us find interesting information which would have been impossible to find on our own. Grow as high as possible, just don't become evil like your objective says.
What do you think about Google’s influence on us so far, is it good or bad?
