Woodpeckers Blamed For The Demise Of The Once Highest Flagpole In The World

by Janice Ambrose.
The once tallest flagpole in the world, The Kew Flagpole, in Kew, south west London, is to be taken down as it has become unsafe for flag flying. The wooden structure was in the Guiness Book of Records in 1959, when it measured 225 feet.
The wooden flagpole, in Kew Gardens, has been shortened several times, but now sadly this historic structure has to come down. Wood pecker action and decay have made it unsafe.

It will be taken down by steeplejacks, which will be a major operation.
If this flagpole could talk, it would be able to relate many stories, I'm sure.

Metal flagpoles now reach much greater heights.
