£20 banknotes were meant as a novelty item and were being sold out of the trunk of a car in Gateshead on Tyneside when authorities came and confiscated hundreds of the fake money by the seller. Officers will be searching for more such sellers in the area
According to the
report these fake notes look and feel like the genuine £20 notes except for the Queen's head being substituted with other images instead.
Some of the images are cartoon characters like Bart and Homer Simpson. Various actors and athletes also adorn the fake notes.
Officers are concerned that these fake notes will find themselves passed as genuine money into the public circulation. Con artists could fold the notes to hide the face and no one could tell the difference if they did not look closely enough.
Gateshead Council is warning anyone with eyesight problems, all shoppers, retailers and traders to be careful when accepting all notes now. Inspect them first, especially if they are folded up when passed.
The Bank Of England said: "It is against the law to replicate a bank note, regardless of intention.
"It doesn't matter what the intent was. If these notes can be folded in such a way as to be mistaken for the real thing then they are a counterfeit and they are illegal."
